IMARA Artist Ambassador (Asia)
Freelance | Approximately one day per week | Asia
About IMARA
IMARA is the global voice for music performers' rights.
We bring together performers, performer organisations and collective management organisations to ensure that performers are properly recognised, protected and remunerated in a rapidly changing world.
Our work includes the future of performers' rights in
AI, streaming and audiovisual exploitation
, as well as national issues affecting performers in individual countries.
IMARA is now developing its presence across Asia and is looking for an enthusiastic and committed
Artist Ambassador for Asia
.
The opportunity
This is an unusual opportunity for a
performer or someone closely connected to the performing community
to become the face and network-builder for IMARA across Asia.
We are not looking for a government affairs specialist or a policy expert.
We are looking for someone who
cares passionately about performers' rights, understands performers and their world, has energy and initiative, and wants to learn
.
The successful candidate will work closely with senior IMARA colleagues, including the IMARA leadership and our international policy and communications teams. They will learn about the issues, campaigns and strategies from the IMARA team and then help bring those messages to performers, artists, industry leaders and governments across Asia.
The role is approximately
one day per week
, with additional time agreed when required for important campaigns, meetings or events. The 'one day per week' is the average amount of time expected for the role. It would not be a fixed day, but those hours would be allocated according to the demands of the role that week. It might be a meeting with a government. It might be meetings with the Asia Forum or a National Campaign Team. It might be desk work making arrangements, sending emails etc.
What you will do
Build relationships with performers
Develop a network of performers and artists across Asia who care about the future of their profession.
In particular, identify and engage:
High-profile national performers and artists.
Emerging artists with strong audiences.
Performer Ambassadors.
National headliners who can speak publicly about performers' rights.
Performer organisations and communities.
Help IMARA develop a strong
artists' voice
in Asia.
A particular focus will be identifying performers who can contribute to IMARA's
Artists' Message to World Leaders
through statements, videos, events and other forms of advocacy.
Support IMARA's National Campaign Teams
Work alongside IMARA members in individual countries to help establish and support
national campaign teams
.
A typical team may include:
A communications person.
A member liaison person.
A policy person.
A performer/artist.
Your role will be to help these people work together, keep momentum going and ensure that the campaign is connected to IMARA's wider international objectives.
You will not be expected to be the expert on every issue. You will have the support of IMARA colleagues and will learn from them.
Represent IMARA
Attend appropriate meetings and events on behalf of IMARA.
This may include
Meetings with governments and policymakers.
Meetings with performer organisations.
Music-industry events.
AI conferences.
Streaming and digital-music events.
Audiovisual industry events.
Copyright and creative-industry events.
Performer conferences and gatherings.
You will introduce IMARA, explain our objectives and build relationships.
You will be supported by the IMARA team in preparing for important meetings.
Help arrange meetings
Identify people and organisations that IMARA should be talking to and help open the door.
This could mean arranging meetings with:
Government ministers and officials.
National cultural organisations.
Performer organisations.
Collective management organisations.
Major artists.
Music-industry leaders.
AI and technology organisations.
Broadcasters and audiovisual organisations.
You don't need to arrive as the expert.
Your job is to get the right people around the table and build the relationship.
Learn and communicate IMARA's message
You will work closely with IMARA colleagues to understand our key issues, including:
AI and performers' rights.
Streaming remuneration.
Audiovisual rights.
Public performance rights.
Copyright and related rights.
The changing relationship between performers and technology.
You will then help communicate these issues in ways that make sense to performers and stakeholders in your region.
IMARA will provide the briefing, knowledge and support required.
Identify national issues
Every country has its own priorities.
You will help IMARA understand what matters to performers in different Asian markets and identify opportunities for action.
For example, national campaigns may concern
public performance rights in Japan or Singapore
, alongside the wider international issues of AI, streaming and audiovisual rights.
You will help bring these national concerns to the attention of IMARA and help connect them with the appropriate people within the organisation.
Be IMARA's eyes and ears in Asia
Keep in touch with what is happening in the performing community.
Tell IMARA about
Important developments.
New campaigns.
Emerging issues.
Important events.
Influential performers.
People IMARA should meet.
Opportunities for advocacy.
You will become an important source of
local knowledge, contacts and opportunities
.
Who we are looking for
Ideally, a performer
Our ideal candidate is a
working or former professional performer
who understands the realities of being a performer and has a strong belief that performers should have a voice in determining their future.
You might be
A musician.
A singer.
A conductor.
A performer working across several disciplines.
You may already have a network within the performing community.
You may have some experience of campaigning or advocacy, but
this is not essential
.
Above all, you will be:
Passionate about performers' rights.
You genuinely care about what happens to performers as technology, AI, streaming and the audiovisual industries change.
Curious.
You want to understand the issues and are comfortable learning from people with greater expertise.
Energetic and proactive.
You don't wait to be told what to do. You see an opportunity and pursue it.
Well connected - or capable of becoming well connected.
You enjoy meeting people and building relationships.
Credible with performers.
Other performers trust you and are willing to listen to you.
A good communicator.
You can explain why performers' rights matter without needing to be a policy expert.
Culturally aware.
You understand that the performing community and its relationship with government and industry differs significantly between Asian countries.
A team player.
You will work closely with IMARA colleagues and draw on their expertise rather than trying to be the expert yourself.
Committed.
You believe in IMARA's objectives and are prepared to put energy into helping achieve them.
Experience and knowledge The following would be advantageous but are
not essential
:
Experience as a professional performer.
Experience working with performer organisations.
Experience of campaigning or advocacy.
Existing relationships with artists or music organisations.
Experience attending industry or policy events.
Knowledge of copyright or performers' rights.
Interest in AI and its impact on creative work.
Knowledge of streaming and digital music.
Experience working internationally.
Ability to speak languages other than English.
We are much more interested in commitment, credibility, energy and potential than in formal qualifications.
What IMARA will provide The successful candidate will not be expected to arrive knowing everything about performers' rights.
You will work closely with experienced IMARA colleagues who will provide:
Briefing on IMARA's objectives and campaigns.
Background on AI, streaming and audiovisual rights.
Support in preparing for important meetings.
Campaign materials and messaging.
Advice on national and international issues.
Access to IMARA's international network.
Ongoing guidance and mentoring from senior IMARA colleagues.
The role is therefore an opportunity to
learn while making a practical contribution to the international campaign for performers' rights
.

If that describes you, we would like to hear from you.
