The Role
We are seeking a visionary and technically profound Head of Data Science to lead, mentor, and expand our data science team. You will be responsible for defining and executing our technical strategy, ensuring that our data models and systems deliver maximum business value, specifically within the context of agroforestry, carbon accounting, and resource planning. This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role for a leader passionate about leveraging data to solve critical environmental challenges. Location: Da Nang, Viet Nam
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Team Management
- Define and execute the overall data science, machine learning, and AI strategy for KarbonMap, aligning with product goals focused on agroforestry and carbon project MRV.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and Data Analysts, fostering a culture of innovation and domain expertise.
- Establish best practices for model development, MLOps, deployment, and monitoring, ensuring models meet the rigorous standards for environmental reporting and verification.
Technical Scope & Agroforestry Innovation
You will be the technical authority for the following key areas, specifically applied to agroforestry landscapes:
- Understand carbon methodologies and standards, apply theoretical guidance into practical project activities and planning steps, build and advise engineering on automation, advise stakeholders on forestry best practices, continuously tracking updates to methodologies and standards.
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) & Drone Mapping: Oversee the development of robust models and workflows for processing, analyzing, and extracting features from high-resolution drone and satellite imagery (e.g., biomass estimation, tree counting, canopy health). This is crucial for accurate carbon stock assessments.
- Image Processing & Computer Vision: Drive the creation of object detection, semantic segmentation, and classification models to identify and map elements such as specific crop types, land cover changes, deforestation, and agroforestry system health.
- Large Language Models (LLM) & Natural Language Processing (NLP): Spearhead the use of LLMs for both internal and external applications, including automated reporting generation compliant with MRV standards (e.g., VCS, Gold Standard) and the development of intelligent support chatbots for field teams and project managers.
- Acoustic Processing & Biodiversity Monitoring: Guide the application of machine learning to acoustic data for biodiversity monitoring and ecological health assessments within the agroforestry system.
- Data Services & Architecture: Collaborate with engineering teams to design and build scalable, reliable data pipelines and infrastructure that power our ERP-level data services and reporting tools.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Translate complex agroforestry and carbon-related business problems into clear, well-defined data science projects with measurable success metrics.
- Collaborate closely with Product and Carbon teams to integrate data science outputs seamlessly into the ERP and MRV workflows.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Geoinformatics, Environmental Science (with a strong data focus), or a related quantitative field.
- Experience: 7+ years of progressive experience in Data Science, with at least 3+ years in a leadership role managing and mentoring a team.
- Domain Knowledge: Prior experience or strong understanding of Geospatial analysis, Remote Sensing, Agroforestry, or Carbon Accounting methodologies is a significant advantage.
- Technical Depth: + Expert-level proficiency in Python and key data science libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow/PyTorch); + Proven hands-on experience with GIS software/libraries and processing of aerial/drone/satellite imagery for land cover analysis; + Deep expertise in at least two of the following: Computer Vision, NLP/LLMs, Time Series Analysis, or Acoustic Processing.
- Leadership: Strong strategic thinking, business acumen, and demonstrated ability to drive results in a high-growth environment.
- Language: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, read English research materials.
