1. Be responsible for laying out the blueprints for a building's core infrastructure.
- Mechanical (M): This includes HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, fire suppression, and even things like elevators or escalators.
- Electrical (E): They design power distribution, lighting, telecommunications, security systems, and lightning protection.
- Plumbing (P): This covers fresh water supply, wastewater and stormwater drainage, hot water systems, and all sanitary fixtures.
2. Cost Estimation & Documentation:
Figure out the exact quantities of materials and equipment needed, estimate project costs for MEP components, and produce detailed technical drawings and shop drawings for construction.
3. Construction Oversight:
Once construction begins, actively supervise the installation of these systems on-site. Goal is to ensure everything is built precisely to design, meets all technical and safety standards, and stays compliant with building codes.
4. Technical Coordination:
Engineers also work closely with architects and structural engineers to solve any problems that pop up.
5. Testing & Handover:
Before a building is officially completed, MEP engineers conduct thorough testing and commissioning of all systems. This makes sure everything works perfectly before handing the project over to the client.
6. Maintenance & Optimization Consulting:
Sometimes, extends to advising on or overseeing the long-term maintenance and repair of MEP systems. Engineer might also suggest ways to optimize existing systems for better energy efficiency and performance.
1. Graduate from college/university with a major in
Electrical Engineering or related.
2. Proficient in AutoCAD and paperwork/documentation.
3. 3-5 years of experience in MEP design for interior and office construction projects is preferred.
