TRANSLATOR OF RESEARCH ON FORMER REGISTERED CHILDREN

Background

Worldwide, an estimated 9.1 million children are sponsored through funding in excess of US$3 billion each year. World Vision's (WV) child sponsorship makes up a large portion of this, maintaining the largest number of child sponsorship programs in the world. In 2016 and 2017, WV invested US$3.5 billion to benefit more than 48 million children-including over 3 million sponsored children and approximately 5.9 million of the most vulnerable.
However, there is limited research on child sponsorship models that use a community development approach and those that measure the impact of child sponsorship to former sponsored children who are already adults. The only notable exceptions are those that explore the case of Compassion International's programs and a comprehensive study conducted by WV in 2018 measuring the impact of child sponsorship among former sponsored children who were already adults across six countries.
Compassion's study indicated that their former sponsored children were more likely to have salaried/white-collar jobs were more likely to be leaders in their communities and churches, and more likely to complete a university education than their non-sponsored peers. On the other hand, below were the key findings from the WV study on how sponsored children fared after they graduated from the Sponsorship program, grown adulthood and where navigating life:
• Impact on Education: The majority of respondents in this research, regardless of country, age, employment status or any other factor, cite their education as the most impactful outcome of sponsorship.
• Impact on Personal Development: Beyond their education, participants also recount the lasting impact sponsorship had on them at a more personal level.
• Impact on Altruism: A very large number of respondents in this research exhibited or discussed having a sense of altruism, or a desire to serve others or give back.
In addition, there is still no existing process established within World Vision to consistently track and monitor the status of former sponsored children and there is less resources documenting the impact of WV Child Sponsorship among registered children (RC) at scale over the years. There are stories of transformation but only few are published.
This research aims to capture the impact of child sponsorship on former sponsored children in East Asia and to establish a discipline of following up the former RCs and learn how they are doing and what has changed in their lives after they completed from WV Child Sponsorship.
World Vision International in Vietnam (WVIV) research team will implement 15 key informant interviews with former RC who are above 18 years old. Each interview is no longer than 60 minutes and will be recorded. Then WVIV research team develops case studies and a short video for documentation.
WVIV is looking for a translator/researcher/interpreter/consultant to translate key informant interview transcripts and cases studies.

Purpose of Position

Key Responsibilities

Tasks:
• Read carefully the research design including key informant interview guidance and project information
• Transcribe 15 key informant interview records in the original language (Vietnamese).
• Translate these interview transcripts English
• Translate 5 case studies English (1000 words)
• Translate 01 video (approximately 5 minutes) - English
• Collaborate with research team to ensure the translation meets WVI needs.
Time frame and deadlines:
• This frame contract period will be from 20 Jun to 15 July 2024 and It is expected that the consultancy will follow the below timeline. This could be adjusted based on discussion and agreed by WVV.
• The data collection process is from 10 to 30 June 2024. WVIV send the record/story whenever we have these packages.
Deliverables:
• 15 cleaned interview transcripts in Vietnamese
• 15 translated interview transcripts
• 05 translated case studies
• 01 translated video
Budget of product:
The budget includes amount for interview transcript and translation.
Confidentiality and copyright:
All papers shared with the consultant are confidential to WVIV and should not be used outside of WVIV without permission.
The final report within the frame of this contract is the property of WVIV, and WVIV reserves all rights to it.

Knowledge & Skill

Consultant's qualifications, experiences and competences
• A bachelor degree in English, language, translation, interpreting or similar field
• At least 3 years of experience in English translation, particularly for in-depth interview.
• A strong commitment to delivering timely and high-quality results;
• Excellent written skills in English
• The ability to grasp new concepts quickly, eg technical terms.
• Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
• A clear writing style with an impeccable knowledge of spelling and grammar.
• Attention to detail.
