Job Overview
As Accounting Lead - Senior Transaction Monitoring & Control, you will be the founding owner of our accounting control and transaction monitoring function. This is a build-from-the-ground-up role: you will design the control framework, reconciliation processes, monitoring rules, and reporting infrastructure - not inherit them.
You will work independently with a high degree of ownership, partnering directly with Engineering, Compliance, and Operations leadership. This role suits someone who combines strong accounting fundamentals with a systems mindset and hands-on data skills.
Key Responsibilities
1. Transaction Control & Approval
- Act as the control layer (checker) for high-risk transactions escalated from Operations - including fiat withdrawals, ledger adjustments, and manual corrections - under a maker-checker approval model.
- Review supporting documents and system data before approving accounting entries; ensure every entry is complete, accurate, and properly authorized.
- Define approval thresholds, escalation paths, and exception-handling procedures for transaction processing.
2. Reconciliation & Period-End Close
- Own daily, monthly, and annual close processes for both fiat and crypto operations.
- Perform and supervise multi-way reconciliations: internal ledger vs. bank statements (fiat) and internal ledger vs. on-chain balances / custody wallets (crypto).
- Investigate breaks and discrepancies end-to-end; classify root causes, propose adjusting entries, and drive resolution with Engineering and Operations.
- Ensure ledger balances tie to actual asset positions before books are closed.
3. Transaction Monitoring & Risk Detection
- Design and continuously improve transaction monitoring rules and control logic to detect anomalies, errors, and potential fraud across deposit, withdrawal, and trading flows.
- Identify gaps in operational processes and system controls; propose and implement remediation.
- Escalate unusual patterns to Compliance/AML and management with clear, evidence-based analysis.
4. Build the Function from the Ground Up
- Design and document the chart of accounts, accounting policies, SOPs, and control procedures for exchange operations.
- Define system requirements for reconciliation and accounting tooling; partner with Engineering on automation of controls and reporting.
- Establish the operating rhythm (daily checks, close calendar, exception review) as the function scales.
5. Reporting & Analytics
- Build management dashboards and periodic/ad-hoc reports for financial control and risk oversight (SQL, Power BI/Excel).
- Report daily operational figures and control results to management as required by internal policy and regulators.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Training
- Coordinate with Engineering, Compliance, Customer Support, and banking partners to verify information and resolve transaction issues.
- Train and guide Operations staff on accounting and control procedures; supervise day-to-day transaction processing quality.
- Advise leadership on accounting treatment, process design, and regulatory-driven requirements.
