Position Summary
The Senior Manager, Student Success is accountable for the strategic direction, oversight and delivery of the Student Academic Success service department, including managerial accountability of the team, ensuring that the department creates, and delivers developmental academic and study skills support, curricula, workshop, training, and success analytics for students in all English and higher education programs at RMIT Vietnam. Activities include leadership, direction, strategy and supervision and operational oversight of four functional departmental streams:
- Peer-Assisted Learning Services (PAL) -Responsible for the PAL Operations, including the PAL Academy training program, and the successful design and oversight of a large cohort of high-achieving contingent student employee program tutors who support students in one-to-one training sessions and course / program workshops
- Learning Success - The core service delivered by professional staff educators includes the Writing & Learning Centre and its learning support services; UniStart Academic course design, teaching and delivery of (Learning to Learn at a Global University), training delivery of the PAL Academy and teaching/training mentoring of peer tutors and oversight of the online Learning Lab (online course modules)
- Academic Advising & Analytics - This stream covers two areas - academic success advising for students designated formally at risk by the University. This advising service is part of compliance and process requirements and aligns directly with Program Assessment Boards (PABs) of each School as well as the Academic Registrars group. The second is the Student Success Analytics functional area - an institutional research area providing data collection and analytics on student achievement and retention.
- UniStart Academic pathway- Lead and deliver all academic and administrative work for the academic pathway program, which enrols approximately 200 students annually conditionally admitted to Higher Education undergraduate programs.
As a leader in the Student Experience & Success portfolio under the Office of Executive Dean, the Senior Manager Student Success will provide leadership and subject-matter expertise in collaboration with the Library, Learning and Teaching, Student Connect, Well-being, and Student Life to ensure a strong and cohesive service oriented perspective and will work collaboratively with professional and academic staff from all departments to deliver a range of service and support activities to students that is appropriate and consistent with academic program offerings.
Key accountabilities
- Lead all academic support service and student success program initiatives and analytics under the portfolio of the Director Student Experience & Success to annually design, review and refine the aims and objectives of the department. Contribute significantly to the University strategy and business plan documents as applicable to all relevant staff, students, and other stakeholders, to ensure the Student Academic Success department is meeting the study and learning support needs of the students as well as the institutional reporting valued by the University on student achievement data. Communicate these aims and objectives to all relevant stakeholders within the University while acting as a driver of change in response to student success trends and patterns as the University evolves.
- Lead the Student Academic Success managerial team so that they can devise and deliver on the aims and objectives of the department and in so doing tangibly enhance the student experience. Develop and be accountable to budget for the unit aligned with these aims and objectives and manage expenditure within the approved budget.
- Lead the promotion and embedding of learning skills development within program curricula to academic management and teaching staff in particular in relation to digital experiences and the development of digital online resources.
- Facilitate collaboration between department managers and advisors and academic staff on the creation of workshop and consultation materials for the general student population and individual courses. Oversee the evaluation of the quality of workshops and consultation materials.
- Actively engage with the teaching and learning community within RMIT Vietnam and beyond to demonstrate expertise in the area of academic support in order to devise collaborative interdepartmental strategies and programs.
- Ensure and facilitate professional development and action research opportunities for the department based on educational trends and progressive research areas in the field. Ensure that action research projects are presented and communicated to the RMIT teaching and learning community in order to support the quality of learning and teaching at the University.
- Lead the academic pathway management of the UniStart Academic Pathway - design and evaluate curriculum, support course coordinators and facilitate training and support for all teaching staff for the UniStart Academic pathway. Develop relevant course materials and provide reporting/presentation on the Pathway outcomes to internal and external stakeholders where required.
- Lead and oversee the data and analytics efforts of the department, including the Student on Tracks predictive model, service and delivery data, student achievement data as well as first-year success internal research projects. Report data summaries to key university stakeholders including academic staff, the Director of Student Experience & Success, Office of Executive Dean, the Registrar, Schools, and others, including the Education Committee.
- Oversee the development, design and installation of all SAS digital self-access materials and content.
- Carry out other duties as directed by the Director, Student Experience & Success.
Key selection criteria
Qualifications and Pre-requisites
- Required: Masters degree in relevant field (e.g. Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Higher Education Management, Learning & Teaching, Curriculum design, Developmental Psychology, etc). An internationally recognised teaching qualification.
- Preferred: Specialisation in the area of management in Higher Education, Student Affairs or Student Services.
Employment/Professional Experience
- Required: Minimum 5-7 years' experience in a higher education setting, with proven ability to manage and motivate a team of professionals to successfully deliver a program of work and maintain a positive, collaborative organisational culture. Proven significant expertise and experience in the successful development and evaluation of central academic learning support programs and activities and the development of resources including e-learning resources. Experience with using educational technology tools in a tertiary environment.
- Preferred: At least 5 years of experience managing staff in a transnational university environment. Experience in Higher education course or program teaching and administration. Previous experience working in an intercultural or international university or college.
Competencies - skills, knowledge, abilities
- Ability to lead and influence various projects and initiatives related to development of embedded academic and study skills programs and to deliver on outcomes.
- Demonstrated high level ability to analyse and interpret a complex range of information to address emerging issues in academic transition and learning support. Proven ability to provide expert advice with influence to academic, teaching and professional staff.
- Demonstrated competency with a range of contemporary IT applications in education, especially current approaches to e-learning
- Well-developed interpersonal skills including negotiation, liaison, cross cultural communication, emotional intelligence, and report writing skills.
English Proficiency
- The minimum requirement is IELTS with a score of at least 6.0 or 170 in Linguaskills.
- Fluent English communicator both written and oral.
