Primary focus: Project performance, team performance, operational excellence and selected strategic accounts
About the role
We are looking for an experienced SEO/GEO Leader to become the operational leader of our SEO/GEO team.
You will work directly with the SEO/GEO Manager and lead a team working across SEO, Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), content, technical enablement and talent development.
You need to be able to take ownership of performance.
● When a project is underperforming, you investigate why.
● When strategy needs to change, you make or recommend the change.
● When a team member is struggling, you address it
● When capacity is becoming a problem, you identify it before delivery fails.● When an opportunity appears, you help the team act on it.
We want the person leading the department to remain close to clients, data, search behaviour, AI Search and actual project performance.
Who we are
Our SEO/GEO team works across Artemis Digital and Heads on Pillows, including a strong concentration of hospitality and tourism businesses.
Our purpose is simple:
Help businesses increase direct sales and direct bookings.
That means we do not see SEO as simply increasing rankings or traffic.
Search visibility should ultimately contribute to business growth.
We work across traditional search and emerging AI discovery environments including ChatGPT, Google AI experiences and other AI engines.
SEO and GEO are increasingly interconnected, and we expect our leaders to understand both
What you own
Project performance
● Maintain awareness of the health and performance of projects across the department.
● Ensure projects have a clear strategy rather than simply a list of tasks.
● Challenge strategy when results are not developing as expected.● Identify underperforming projects early.
● Work with Specialists to diagnose problems and decide what should change.
● Escalate genuinely difficult strategic decisions to the SEO/GEO Manager - not routine decisions that can be made independently.
● The objective is to ensure every project is actively managed toward stronger performance
Strategic client ownership
Act as PIC for a small portfolio of strategically important client projects.
These should generally be projects where senior strategic thinking, commercial understanding, complex SEO/GEO decisions or stronger client leadership are required.
Your personal portfolio should be significantly smaller than that of a normal Specialist or Senior Specialist.
The purpose is not to maximise your delivery workload.
The purpose is to keep you close to the work while preserving enough capacity to lead the department.
SEO/GEO strategy
Maintain excellent SEO fundamentals across:
● Technical SEO
● Search intent
● Information architecture
● Content
● Internal linking
● Authority
● Off-site presence
● Analytics
● Conversion
● Local search where relevant
Team leadership
Manage Specialists and work closely with functional leads.
Help people move from: Needs Instruction → Can Execute → Can Own → Can Decide → Can Lead Others
Set expectations clearly.
Coach people where development is required.
Address performance problems rather than allowing them to persist.Identify people capable of taking greater ownership.
Create more leaders rather than creating greater dependence on yourself.
Functional leadership
- Coordinate the department's functional leads:
- Content Lead - content strategy, content quality and content capability.
- Technical Lead - technology, tools, automation and operational efficiency.
- Internal Development Lead - intern recruitment, training and talent development.
Each functional lead also remains a practising SEO/GEO professional and owns a smaller client portfolio.
Quality
- Maintain a high standard of thinking and execution across SEO/GEO projects.
- Review important strategies and deliverables where leadership input genuinely adds value.
- Do not become the final checker of every routine task.
