Head of Engineering

THE ROLE

As Head of Engineering for Vietnam, you will lead our Ho Chi Minh City engineering organisation end to end: its people, its delivery, its technical standards, and its growth. You will be accountable for the outcomes of multiple product teams building customer-facing ordering experiences and platform services, working in close partnership with product management and with engineering leadership in other regions.

This is a player-coach leadership role for someone who has stayed close to modern software engineering while building the organisational muscle to run a multi-team site: hiring and developing engineering managers, holding a high bar for quality and operational excellence, and representing Vietnam within a distributed global leadership team.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Leadership and people

• Lead, coach, and grow a multi-team engineering organisation, developing engineering managers and senior engineers into their next roles.
• Own hiring for the Vietnam site: define the talent strategy, raise the interview bar, and build a team that reflects the best of the local engineering market.
• Foster a culture of technical excellence, psychological safety, and direct, honest feedback - where engineers are proud of both the quality of their code and the impact of their work.
• Act as the senior escalation point for the site, unblocking teams and making the call in critical moments.

Delivery and operations

• Be accountable for the timely, high-quality delivery of agreed roadmaps, in partnership with product owners and stakeholders across markets.
• Put effective monitoring and controls in place for the early identification of risks, issues, and dependencies - and report on them transparently to PH D&T leadership.
• Own service reliability for the systems your teams run: define and operate against SLOs, drive incident response and blameless post-incident learning, and improve DORA-style delivery metrics over time.

Technical direction

• Champion engineering best practice: continuous delivery, automated testing, observability, and secure-by-design development within a DevSecOps framework, including PCI DSS awareness for commerce systems.
• Lead the adoption of AI-assisted engineering across the site - coding assistants, agentic workflows, and AI in the SDLC - with clear guardrails for quality and security.
• Keep technical debt visible and deliberately managed, balancing platform investment against feature delivery.

Global collaboration

• Work as part of a distributed engineering leadership team across the UK, US, Colombia, and Vietnam, sharing ownership of global platform outcomes.
• Build strong working relationships with product, design, data, and market teams, bridging time zones and cultures.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Significant experience leading multiple engineering teams simultaneously, including managing engineering managers, in a product-led software organisation.
• A strong hands-on technical background - you can credibly review an architecture, challenge an estimate, and hold your own in a design discussion. Experience with modern web platforms (e.g. React/TypeScript front ends, API-driven commerce backends, cloud-native infrastructure) is a strong advantage.
• A track record of delivering complex roadmaps to a high standard, with demonstrable improvements in delivery and reliability metrics.
• Experience running production services at scale: SLOs, incident management, and operational ownership.
• Proven ability to hire, develop, and retain engineering talent in a competitive market.
• Experience collaborating across geographically distributed teams and time zones, with excellent spoken and written English.
• High autonomy, sound judgement, and comfort operating with organisational complexity and ambiguity.

Nice to have

• Experience in digital commerce, food delivery, marketplaces, or another high-volume consumer transactional domain.
• Experience managing third-party suppliers and outsourced delivery partners.
• Exposure to compliance-driven environments (PCI DSS, data privacy) and to platform or multi-tenant product architectures.
• Practical experience introducing AI tooling into engineering workflows.

This is the most senior engineering role at one of our largest engineering hubs, with genuine ownership of people, delivery, and technical direction. The work is high-traffic consumer commerce at global scale, and the role carries real influence over both the platform and the growth of the engineers you lead.
