AI Engineering Lead

Role Overview: SmartOSC is looking for a AI Engineering Lead to work directly with our enterprise customers to design, build, and ship production AI and data applications. You will sit at the intersection of engineering and the customer: you embed with client teams, understand their business problems firsthand, and turn them into working software - full-stack applications, RAG and agentic AI systems, and data-driven capabilities deployed into real environments. This is a hands-on, customer-facing engineering role.
You'll own delivery end to end, from integrating messy source data to standing up the application and AI layer, and you'll be the technical face SmartOSC puts in front of the customer. An ideal candidate combines strong software development skills, applied Gen AI experience, and the interpersonal ability to lead a room.
Key Deliverables & Responsibilities
Embed with customers to understand their operational and business challenges, then design and deliver solutions that address them directly.
Engineer full-stack applications end to end - front-end, back-end, APIs, and integrations - and deploy them into production.
Design and build RAG applications: retrieval pipelines, embedding and vector stores, chunking/indexing strategies, and grounding LLM outputs on enterprise data.
Build agentic AI systems: tool-using agents, multi-step workflows, orchestration, and evaluation of agent behavior.
Deploy and run applications on cloud infrastructure, owning the path from development through to a reliable production environment.
Lead technical deep-dives, demos, proofs-of-concept, and customer enablement / training sessions.
Continuously identify technical risks and gaps, and devise mitigation strategies ahead of customer needs.
Produce technical documentation, application specs, and supporting artifacts.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to coding standards, design reviews, and code reviews.
Work closely with product and engineering to feed customer learnings back into the product.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of professional full-stack software development experience with object-oriented languages.
Proficiency with JavaScript and Python.
Experience with a modern JS framework (React, Vue, Angular, etc.) and version control (Git).
Hands-on experience building RAG applications is mandatory - retrieval pipelines, vector databases, embeddings, and grounding LLMs on enterprise data.
Experience building agentic AI systems (tool use, orchestration, multi-step reasoning workflows).
Conceptual knowledge with data engineering: building ETL/ELT pipelines, data modeling, and working with large / messy datasets.
Working knowledge with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
Strong verbal and written English communication; comfortable working directly with customers and cross-functional teams.
Analytical, detail-oriented, and able to own ambiguous problems end to end.
Willingness to travel / work on-site with customers as needed.
