About KarbonMap
KarbonMap is a tech start-up incubated inside Teko, building its flagship end-to-end nature landscaping project management platform, serving enterprises and nonprofits in forestry and agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, organic products' certification and other export-required certifications. Focusing on the global south, KarbonMap carries Teko's social mission to build better lives, promote diversity and social inclusion. With a strong team of 40, under the direct leadership of Teko's senior management and its founder, KarbonMap was founded in March 2023 and just turned 18 months old recently inside Teko.
KarbonMap's mobile app is built for the global south, prioritising performance on mass commodity phones over model performance, able to operate in no connectivity zone. Our development offices are located in Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh and Da Nang, but the team is expected to work accommodating multiple time zones.
About the Role
Team Responsibilities
KarbonMap is building a small data science training cohort of 5 to identify talents to lead our research & developments of applied ML models, to walk alongside our customers, customising voice-2-text, NLP, image processing, generative AI, amongst other technologies to optimise operational processes, analysing and integrating critical satellite monitoring components and other remote sensing technologies into our products and platform to monitor and manage risks for our customers.
Our data scientists are expected to be:
- Fluent in basic statistical methods and able to apply such principles into our forestry and agriculture use cases;
- Able to implement high quality production code, or recognize the need for help;
- Good at research in English materials, able to read and write fluently in English;
- Able to work fulltime;

Day-to-day Job
- Assess, advise, plan together with the product manager and the engineering leads the AI/ML and other sensors' product roadmap and feature feasibility. Build MVP models to check feasibility, at times edge models when necessary.
- Work closely with engineering leads to plan roadmap, continuously execute model performance monitoring and improvement. Research on state of the art models and propose possible improvements or migrations to ensure product relevance and the continuity of the customer journey.
- Collaborate across the functional teams as a team player and a domain expert. Advise product manager and leads on timeline and feasibility, communicate with data analysts to build reports, work with the engineering team to deploy and serve models inside the platform.
- Build, test,deploy, monitor and improve AI/ML models within the Teko data infrastructure. Ensure product continuity.
- Welcome customers' feedback and suggestions, plan and execute continuous model improvements based on your own observations, team feedback and the customers' feedback.
Required Qualifications, Skills and Competencies:
- Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics, Physics or equivalent degrees or experience in a technical field.
- Proficient in both theory and practical implementation of data science models. Comfortable working with Python, R, CI/CD. Willing and able to pick up new tech stacks as required, such as embedded AI models on-device.
- Familiarity with statistical methods such as survey methodologies, experimental design, statistical tests for significance.
- Strong sense of product mission, openness to learn and willingness to go beyond the immediate job scopes to deliver product outcomes.
- Concise written and verbal communication skills in English and Vietnamese (or willingness to use translation tools when necessary).
- Self-driven to project manage for self, team and product. A strong sense of accountability, take initiative. Able to prioritise amongst competing demands.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in forestry research, community survey, Monitoring & Evaluation
- Experience in analysing data collected from remote sensing IoT devices and satellite data
- Experience in carbon crediting standards, sustainable agriculture and timber standards, supply chains of agricultural products
- Experience in building B2B softwares with applied data science modules.
- Experience working with project teams from Africa, Southeast Asia, India, China or South America.
- Experience working with customers and investors from the U.S. and Europe.
