Database Administrator Specialist (DBA) is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, security, performance, and availability of organizational database systems. This role ensures data integrity, database reliability, optimal performance, backup and recovery readiness, and compliance with company security standards. The DBA works closely with software developers, system administrators, data engineers, and business stakeholders to support mission-critical applications and business operations.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Maintenance
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain database management systems (DBMS).
- Manage database environments including development, testing, staging, and production.
- Perform database patching, version upgrades, and migrations.
- Monitor database health, performance, and availability.
- Ensure high availability and disaster recovery configurations are functioning properly.
Performance Optimization
- Analyze and optimize database performance, queries, indexes, and stored procedures.
- Monitor system resource utilization and identify bottlenecks.
- Implement database tuning strategies to improve efficiency and scalability.
- Conduct performance testing and capacity planning.
Backup & Recovery Management
- Develop and maintain backup and recovery procedures.
- Perform regular database backups and restoration testing.
- Ensure business continuity through disaster recovery planning.
- Support recovery efforts during database incidents and outages.
Security & Compliance
- Manage database user accounts, roles, and permissions.
- Implement database security policies and access controls.
- Monitor and audit database activities to ensure compliance.
- Protect sensitive data through encryption and security best practices.
- Support compliance requirements such as ISO 27001, GDPR, PCI-DSS, or other applicable regulations.
Monitoring & Troubleshooting
- Investigate and resolve database-related incidents and performance issues.
- Configure monitoring and alerting tools for proactive issue detection.
- Perform root cause analysis and recommend preventive measures.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and application teams to resolve system issues.
Collaboration & Support
- Work with development teams to design efficient database structures.
- Review database designs, schemas, and application data models.
- Support software deployment and release activities.
- Provide database expertise and technical guidance to internal teams.
Documentation
- Maintain database architecture and configuration documentation.
- Document standard operating procedures, backup processes, and recovery plans.
- Create technical reports and system health status reports.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field.
Experience
- At least 5 years of experience in database administration or related roles.
- Hands-on experience managing enterprise database systems.
- Experience supporting high-availability and mission-critical environments.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Oracle Database
- MySQL
- PostgreSQL
- MongoDB (preferred)
- Experience with database backup and recovery strategies.
- Strong SQL programming and query optimization skills.
- Knowledge of database replication, clustering, and high-availability solutions.
- Familiarity with Linux and Windows Server administration.
- Experience with database monitoring tools.
- Understanding of cloud database platforms (Azure SQL, Amazon RDS, Google Cloud SQL).

- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

- Ability to work under pressure and manage critical incidents.

Preferred Qualifications
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate.
- Oracle Certified Professional (OCP).
- AWS Certified Database Specialty.
- PostgreSQL or MySQL certifications.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Knowledge of data warehousing, ETL, and data governance practices.
