Job Overview
The Learning and Teaching Assistant (LTA) plays a key role in supporting teaching and learning. Working under the direction of the class teacher, the LTA supports individuals and small groups of students, delivers targeted interventions, promotes positive behaviour for learning, and contributes to a safe, inclusive and well-organised learning environment. The LTA supports students' academic progress, emotional well-being and independence through an empathetic, respectful and ethical approach, while upholding the school's safeguarding, behaviour and inclusion policies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Supporting Teaching and Learning

• Deliver targeted interventions (e.g. reading, phonics, writing or mathematics) as directed by the teacher or learning support lead.
• Reinforce learning objectives and success criteria, encouraging students to think deeply and make meaningful progress.
• Support students with additional needs, including special educational needs (SEN) or English as an additional language (EAL), to remove barriers to learning with empathy and patience.
• Encourage students to become independent, confident and resilient learners who take increasing responsibility for their learning.
• Promote effective spoken and written English across the curriculum, modelling clear and respectful communication.
2. Assessment and Feedback
• Provide clear, constructive feedback to students on their learning, under the guidance of the class teacher.
• Contribute to the assessment of pupil progress through thoughtful observation, discussion and evidence gathered during lessons and interventions.
• Share relevant information with teachers in a timely and professional manner to support planning and next steps.
• Support students in reflecting on and reviewing their own learning, encouraging a growth mindset and self-awareness.
3. Behaviour and Well-being
• Promote positive behaviour for learning in line with the school's behaviour policy, modelling calm, respectful and ethical conduct.
• Establish positive, trusting and respectful relationships with students, acting as a consistent role model at all times.
• Support students' emotional well-being and social development through an empathetic and nurturing approach.
• Help students to develop co-operative and collaborative learning skills.
• Manage low-level behaviour issues calmly and consistently, escalating concerns appropriately and professionally.
4. Classroom and Teacher Support
• Work collaboratively with teachers and colleagues to support the effective delivery of the curriculum.
• Prepare and organise learning resources as directed (e.g. photocopying, laminating, setting up activities).
• Support classroom routines, transitions and organisation to maximise learning time and promote independence.
• Assist with administrative tasks such as attendance support or classroom displays, where required.
• Ensure resources are handled respectfully, stored safely after use, and that any damage, loss or misuse is reported to the homeroom teacher or relevant staff in a timely manner.
5. Supervision and Student Safety
• Supervise students during break times, lunchtimes, transitions and school activities as required by the duty rota.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times, acting responsibly and ethically in line with safeguarding and health and safety procedures.
• Assist with the supervision of students on educational visits and school events.
• Support safe, calm and orderly movement around the school.
6. Communication and Professional Conduct
• Maintain open, respectful and professional communication with teachers, colleagues and support staff.
• Use school communication systems (e.g. email, internal platforms) appropriately and promptly.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times and act with integrity when handling sensitive information.
• Discuss pastoral or learning concerns with the class teacher, who holds overall responsibility for students.
• Follow the school's safeguarding and child protection procedures, maintain professional boundaries with students, and report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
7. Inclusion and School Values
• Promote an inclusive environment where diversity is respected, valued and celebrated.
• Support students from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds with sensitivity and understanding.
• Actively contribute to the wider life, values and aims of the school as a collaborative, adaptable and reflective practitioner.

• Assist with, support or lead after-school activities and clubs when required, ensuring student safety and engagement.
• Attend staff meetings, training sessions and training days as directed.
• Support school events and activities as needed.
• Bus Duty - Assist in ensuring the safety and proper supervision of students during bus journeys (if applicable).
