About the Role
CECCS is recruiting Research Programmer Intern to support ongoing and upcoming research projects in environment, energy transition, climate change, and development-related policy challenges in Vietnam and ASEAN.
This internship is designed for strong students or recent graduates who want to apply their academic training such as data analysis, coding, statistics, economics, GIS, applied mathematics, or basic machine learning to real-world research problems.
At CECCS, interns will work in a serious research environment that values reliable data, clear documentation, reproducible workflows, and high-quality outputs. The work is practical and often requires checking details, revising outputs, validating information, and improving deliverables based on feedback.
This role is especially suitable for candidates who want to build research capacity, strengthen their academic profile, and explore future pathways in graduate study, scholarships, policy research, data science, or applied research.
Why Work With Us
CECCS works on applied research problems at the intersection of environment, energy, climate change, and development. Our projects are not only academic exercises; they are connected to real technical, economic, policy, and social challenges in Vietnam and ASEAN.
Research areas include:
Renewable energy resource assessment
Energy systems and energy transition analysis
Climate change and development economics
Electricity pricing policy
Carbon market simulation
Environmental and climate justice
GIS, remote sensing, and environmental data analysis
Applied machine learning, forecasting, optimization, and scientific computing
As a Research Intern, you will have opportunities to:
Learn domain knowledge across climate, energy, environment, and development policy.
Apply data, coding, statistics, GIS, economics, and analytical skills to real research projects.
Support research outputs such as reports, policy briefs, technical notes, working papers, and presentation materials.
Join workshops, seminars, and academic exchange activities with universities, researchers, and external partners.
Gain exposure to international-standard research practices, including documentation, reproducibility, review cycles, and technical quality control.
CECCS has operated for 10 years and has worked with ministries, public institutions, universities, and research partners. The center is also expanding collaborations with international scholars, universities, and climate-related research and investment organizations.
This is an opportunity to apply what you have learned in school data, code, economics, statistics, GIS, engineering, or applied mathematics to problems with real social, environmental, and policy significance.
Research Environment
CECCS provides a supportive but demanding research environment. Interns are expected to learn quickly, work carefully, communicate clearly, and take assigned work seriously.
The working style is built around:
Practical research workflows
Data validation and quality checking
Clear documentation
Reproducible analysis
Iteration and review cycles
Feedback from senior researchers
Careful communication of assumptions, methods, and results
This is not a light internship designed only for task completion. It is a research-oriented role for candidates who want to develop real analytical capacity through hands-on project work.
Tools and Research Infrastructure
To support effective research work, CECCS provides access to suitable tools and infrastructure depending on project needs.
These may include:
Professional AI tools for research productivity, literature review, coding support, outlining, and documentation.
Collaborative workflows involving documentation, versioning, reproducibility, feedback, and review.
Computational resources for tasks such as geospatial processing, optimization, large-scale model runs, or model training when appropriate.
Guidance from senior team members on data validation, research communication, technical workflows, and analytical standards.
These tools are provided primarily to support research quality. They also create a strong learning environment for interns who want to develop serious technical and analytical skills.
Research Exposure and Publication Opportunities
Depending on project needs and individual performance, Research Interns may have opportunities to contribute to:
Internal research notes and working papers.
Technical reports and project deliverables.
Conference submissions or journal-oriented outputs where appropriate.
Workshops, seminars, and academic exchange activities.
Collaborative research with external researchers and institutions, including international partners.
Publication is not guaranteed. However, strong contributors may gain meaningful exposure to academic-quality research, writing, review, and publication processes.
This experience may be especially valuable for students who are considering graduate study, research careers, policy research, scholarship applications, or international academic pathways.

Job Description
1. Data Collection, Cleaning & Analysis
Research Interns will support the research team in collecting, organizing, and validating data from multiple sources, including websites, reports, public datasets, APIs, geospatial data, satellite data, academic papers, and policy documents.
Key responsibilities include:
Search, filter, and validate data from public and institutional sources.
Organize datasets related to electricity demand, weather, wind and solar resources, land use, infrastructure, policy indicators, economic variables, and environmental indicators.
Use Excel, Google Sheets, GIS tools, Python, R, or AI-assisted workflows where appropriate to clean, summarize, visualize, and check data.
Create summary tables tracking developments in science, technology, climate, energy, environment, and policy.
Cross-check data quality and flag inconsistencies, missing values, unclear assumptions, or questionable sources.
Support the preparation of structured datasets for analysis, mapping, forecasting, modeling, or reporting.
2. Research and Model Support
Research Interns will learn how research teams translate real-world problems into datasets, maps, models, simulations, and analytical outputs.
Key responsibilities include:
Support Python notebooks, spreadsheets, or computational workflows for data cleaning, visualization, model testing, or validation.
Help prepare inputs for GIS analysis, remote sensing workflows, time-series forecasting, machine learning experiments, or energy-system scenario models.
Compare model outputs, maps, charts, tables, or forecasts.
Write short analytical notes on what changed, what looks reasonable, what requires further checking, and what assumptions may affect results.
Assist with reviewing and improving analytical outputs.
Help maintain documentation so that data, assumptions, methods, and results can be reviewed by other team members.
3. Reporting, Documentation & Research Communication
Research Interns will support the preparation of research outputs for internal and external use.
Key responsibilities include:
Consolidate analytical findings into Word reports, PowerPoint presentations, Google Slides, or internal documentation.
Create clear charts, tables, figures, maps, and concise presentation slides.
Support the development of infographics and internal communication materials.
Document data sources, assumptions, methods, workflows, and limitations.
Participate in team discussions, review cycles, and research update meetings.
Communicate task progress clearly and raise questions when assumptions, data, or outputs require clarification.
Note: This role is for candidates who want to build reliable research outputs, not simply complete assigned tasks.
