Job Overview
This role supports cacao bean quality assurance and sustainability management across Marou's cacao supply operations, from sourcing areas to the factory. Responsibilities include quality assessment, sensory evaluation, fermentation improvement, standard development, compliance monitoring, audit support, and corrective-action follow-up.
Key Responsibilities
Bean Quality Control & Sensory Evaluation
- Support cacao bean quality standards, sampling, inspections, and acceptance criteria under the guidance of the Cacao Quality Specialist.
- Conduct assigned physical and sensory assessments across sourcing, fermenting, warehouse, and factory areas.
- Prepare samples, record results, flag abnormalities, escalate quality risks, and support incoming-bean and factory quality verification.
Quality Standards, Procedures & Implementation
- Support SOPs, forms, checklists, and guidance for quality, fermentation, drying, storage, sampling, and sensory evaluation.
- Help ensure approved procedures are applied consistently across field, warehouse, sourcing, and factory operations.
- Support training, coaching, sensory calibration, and feedback to improve quality implementation.
Fermentation & Post-Harvest Improvement Projects
- Execute approved fermentation trials and post-harvest projects under the guidance of the Cacao Quality Specialist.
- Evaluate trial beans, maintain records, and support pilot fermentation.
- Coordinate with Sourcing, Project & Technical Assistance, R&D, and other teams on quality-improvement actions.
Sustainability Standard Establishment & Improvement
- Coordinate development, review, and revision of Marou's Sustainability Standard against relevant frameworks, certifications, regulations, and responsible-sourcing practices.
- Coordinate with stakeholders to define sustainability criteria, evidence, assessment methods, and supporting tools.
- Support piloting, validation, training, and communication of new or revised requirements.
- Maintain controlled standard documents and recommend improvements based on audits, operations, regulatory changes, and emerging risks.
Sustainability Compliance Monitoring
- Conduct sustainability compliance checks across farms, fermenters, suppliers, sourcing areas, and cacao operations.
- Review practices, records, traceability data, and evidence to identify gaps, nonconformities, and risks.
- Support audits, supplier assessments, certification, corrective and preventive action closure, audit-ready evidence, and escalation of significant or repeated issues.
Reporting & Data Management
- Collect, consolidate, and verify quality and sustainability data for reporting.
- Prepare reports, dashboards, and updates on quality, fermentation, compliance, audits, and corrective and preventive action status.
- Analyze trends, flag risks and improvement opportunities, and maintain records for reviews and audits.
Requirements
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Food Technology, Food Science, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or another relevant field.
- 1-3 years of experience in food or agricultural quality assurance, sustainability compliance, responsible sourcing, agricultural production, or a related field.
- Willingness to travel regularly to sourcing areas and work in field conditions.
- Good analytical, reporting, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and reporting tools.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Requirements
- Experience with cacao, coffee, food ingredients, or agricultural commodities.
- Experience in sensory tasting or analysis.
- Experience with field inspections, audits, supplier assessments, or compliance checks.
- Familiarity with sustainability standards, EUDR, certification, traceability, or ESG.
- Experience working with farmers.
- Proactive, collaborative, adaptable, and eager to learn.
