JOB DESCRIPTION
Lead the team
- Manage a team of 5-7 engineers spanning full-time staff and contractors - hiring, onboarding, goal setting, 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development.
- Build a team culture where full-time and contract engineers work as one unit, with clear ownership, documentation, and knowledge transfer that survives contract rotation.
- Handle the practical side of a blended team: statements of work, contractor extensions and offboarding, and continuity planning for critical knowledge.
Own delivery
- Run quarterly planning for your team, translating company objectives into scoped, sequenced, and estimated work.
- Drive estimation and commitment practices the team actually trusts - break down epics, surface dependencies early, and hold a realistic line on scope.
- Track and communicate delivery status honestly, including when a date is at risk and what the options are.
- Partner with product, QA, and infrastructure counterparts to get work to production safely.
Stay technical
- Participate in design reviews and architectural decisions across the frontend and backend stack.
- Review code, unblock engineers, and set the bar for quality, testing, and operational readiness.
- Make pragmatic build-vs-buy and technical debt tradeoffs, and be able to defend them.
Raise the productivity ceiling
- Introduce and champion AI-assisted development tooling across the team, and measure whether it's actually helping.
- Establish sensible guardrails for AI-generated code - review standards, security expectations, and what should never leave the building.
REQUIREMENTS
Required
- 3+ years managing software engineering teams, with direct experience managing a mix of full-time employees and contractors.
- Strong technical grounding in a modern frontend stack - [protected info] and equivalents (TypeScript, modern build tooling, component architecture, state management).
- Backend depth in Golang and Java, enough to review designs and code credibly.
- Demonstrated experience with quarterly planning, project management, and estimation at a team level.
- Hands-on experience using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar) to increase engineering throughput, and a point of view on where they help and where they don't.
- Based in Bangkok, with the flexibility and willingness to work US Eastern Time hours on a regular basis.
- Strong written and spoken English.
Nice to have
- Working knowledge of AWS - ECS/EKS, RDS, networking, IAM, cost awareness.
- Background in payments, fintech, or another regulated, high-availability domain.
- Experience with PCI DSS or similar compliance regimes.
- Familiarity with structured goal frameworks such as OGSM or OKRs.
- Experience managing distributed teams across multiple time zones.
